Peter Granser - Was Einem Heimat War

My friend and fellow POC, Peter Granser, is offering an interesting special edition of his new book Was Einem Heimat War.

Peter has documented the place which was once the town of Gruorn in the Swabian Alb. This town was forced to evacuate in 1939 and it was never again to be recognized as a township, instead it has been used for over a century as a training ground for military and various forms of bombing ranges. The ground, marked by so much history and strongly contaminated projectiles, is now a biosphere reserve.

The work “Was einem Heimat war” (What we once called home) has resulted in a series of photographs divided into multiple parts. Black-and-white photographs of the landscape showing the scars left by the era of military use and the remains of what was once the town of Gruorn are accompanied by a series of projectiles, tank ammunition and granates photographed as sculpturally staged objects. These images are juxtaposed by two five-part photographic panoramas, enclosed to the book as a Leporello fold. (publisher)

POC Lecture/Panel Discussion

Please join us for a public event featuring the POC group North America on Saturday January 8^th from 3-7pm. POC, standing for Piece of Cake, is comprised of a group of young artists whose preferred medium is photography. The group’s mission is to enable the artists to interact as they create, produce and distribute their works. This event will be the first exchange in the United States between the members of POC and a public audience.

The first hour of the event will consist of a formal presentation of the group, presented by one of the members, addressing the creation, expansion, and nature of POC. During the second half of the event there will be a panel discussion between four members of POC, moderated by Christopher Gianunzio. Potential topics of discussion during the panel include: economic issues, collective nature, concentration of creative efforts, personal practice, and the roles of PPAC and POC functioning in larger communities, acting as centers for discussion and sites to disseminate ideas and creative practice.

Friederike von Rauch - Neues Museum

Im a fan of Friederike, so one of these would have found its way onto my shelf anyway, but it was the opening words of the british architect David Chipperfield that sealed the deal:

Neues Museum - Special edition book and print(s), 2009

Friederike v. Rauch, a friend and colleague has just released her new book which is available with one (or both) of the above prints. Rather large for a special editon/book set, they are 60x60 cm analogue c-prints in a rather small edition of 15+4, thus the price is a bit higher than most on the Buffet, but that, of course, is relative.

The transformation of Berlin’s Neues Museum from a ruin back into a functioning museum was entrusted to the British architect David Chipperfield. Though initially controversial, the spectacular realization of his plans have vindicated the architect against his critics. Taking a conservationist approach, Chipperfield has managed to preserve the building’s late classical heritage while at the same time creating modern spaces of timeless elegance.

Berlin-based photographer Friederike von Rauch uses an analog camera to produce her images of landscapes and buildings. The poetic, lucid photographs in her latest project document the restoration of the Neues Museum, centerpiece of the Museum Island in Berlin, which was badly damaged during World War II. I recieved this info from my friends and fellow POCs Tehnica Schweiz. I'm not sure how complicated it would be to order one or two of these via post, nor an I find the exact images that are being offered, but the name list is quite impressive in the Hungarian photo scene, and the price of 20 euro isn't even worth mentioning so it might be worth the effort to dig a bit deeper.

The Lumen Gallery is selling original, signed and numbered copies of photographs by young Hungarian Photographers.

I have been away for 12 days, starting at the Miami art fair, sitting now in Higley visiting family and photographing. One certainly felt the weight of the recession as far as sales go. I don't know if it is a coinicidence, but I have been getting alot of offers lately from photographers offering editions at very low prices. I am collecting a list, and will post it tomorrow.

This is a special edition print and book produced by Peter Granser, it differs from the one available through the publishers of this book, Hatje Cantz.

A journey through George W. Bush’s home country: Peter Granser photographs billboards featuring the slogans of conservative America.

The arrow indicates the direction—it unmistakably points to the right: in the middle of a prairie-like, outdoor setting on a billboard with large letters that spell out “Signs.” It is an image within an image of symbolic content, for Peter Granser has given his latest series of works, which were done in Texas in 2006–07, the title Signs. After Sun City and Coney Island, Signs tracks down points of reference that can be grasped visually as a means to reveal America’s current state of mind. On his quest for suitable signs and symbols, the photographer traveled more than nineteen thousand kilometers throughout Texas, working from a stance of distant observation and skepticism as he captured images of emptiness and stagnation in George W. Bush’s home country.

This book is a beautifully dirty.  If you havn't seen it live, be forwarned, it fits well to a well-browsed book table at the Strand, but when you unpack it your first thought is to send it back, then you realize that, like the american system it protrays, the rough edges are simply something we have to live with.

About the print:  “Job Well Done!” was photographed in Fort Hood, Texas and shows plastic cups pressed into the holes of a fence in front of supply containers. they spell out a welcome home for soldiers returning from Iraq. 

The edition is 33+3ap - the folder size is 42x42 cm, the print size 40x40cm.

This is one of the two bound dummies from my HIGLEY book which came out in 2007 in the Kehrer publishing house. 

As is the case with dummies, there are several images which aren't in the final book, and can only be seen here, and the text is a condensed version of the final one. 

"Why do we take pictures? To preserve memories? Stop time? Tell stories? Andrew Phelps' photographs of Higley, Arizona do all of these things. But most of all they make me want to go out into the world. Stripped of the usual tendency toward cynical sensationalism, Phelps' pictures depict Higley with a mixture of clarity and affection. After looking at this remarkable book, I feel like going outside to chat with my neighbour."

It is linen-bound, ca 80 pages with ca 60 color images, ink-jet printed on normal paper. The images are definately not the quality of the final book, but this is more of a documentation of the editing process. I am not selling number 2 yet, and it is even a different selection as well so one could argue that this is a one-of-a-kind.

An important part of my childhood in Arizona were the camping trips we would take. In America, especially in the west, one can simply put on a back-pack, walk into the wilderness, catch a fish, build a fire and sleep on the ground. A wilderness experience had much to do with adventure; being challenged, scared and unsettled.

Upon moving to Europe in the late 80‘s, I quickly realized that the wilderness in Europe has been filtered through centuries of history and tradition and that the camping culture is far from the unpredictable and direct exchange with nature as it was in my childhood. The world of the camper is one of comfort, predictability, and a desperate attempt at a home away from home; the wilderness is avoided at all costs.

While people may long for the simple, carefree life in the midst of nature, they evidently find it impossible to live easily without comfort, safety and cleanliness. It is the search for a „true, wilderness experience”, caught between the urge to be free and the need for security.

The definitions of place and time become diffused in a tightly edited selection of 8 large-format images depicting what we have come to recognize as a war-torn Iraq. The irritation begins when we realize that this Baghdad is possibly not in the middle east, but maybe, just maybe, east of Phoenix, Arizona.

A series of convincing facades stand in for buildings and insurgent compounds in Iraq. Andrew Phelps' deftly re-created stage sets are tellingly empty. They stand as a metaphor for the frightening lack of understanding, in America and around the world, of basic concepts in Middle Eastern culture. At a time when even our leaders appear confused about the difference between Sunni and Sh'ia, it is crucial that we grasp just how much more complex the issues are than they would have us believe. Whether or not those leaders actually understand this true depth of complexity, there can be no doubt that they are staging a play in which they have done everything – from creating the characters to forging the plot – except build the set. Andrew Phelps takes this final step for them to reveal their conceit.
