Michael Lundgren - Transfigurations 20x200

Michael Lundgren, Yuha Basin.

A while ago I posted about Michael Lundgren's book Transfigurations published by Radius.
I just got word that the 20x200 edition is still available.

Another place, officially launching tomorrow with a similar strategy as 20x200 is the Nova Gallery.
They are starting with 3 interesting photographers, so it looks promising and tomorrow will tell.
Certainly worth checking out tomorrow.

Stephen Mathewson-Teisco Del Rey

This is a 2 part story.

The first starts with me, slowly realizing that my book collection is not as big as I once thought. All in all I think there are about 600 books, which isn't bad, but only about a tenth of those are what I would consider "special editions" in any stretch of the word to justify a spot on the BUFFET. There are so many interesting book review sites, 5b4, Bint, which are dedicated to books alone with places like  American Suburb, Lens Culture and Photo-Eye featuring a nice book review now and then, so, instead of trying to keep up with "real" reviewers and writers, (I'm just a scrapper), I have decided to let myself occasionally slip into broader waters, but will still try to embrace the hardtofind/notsowellknown/getthemwhileyoucan touch that has always and will always interest me.

A logical extension of the special edition books that I like so much is, well, the editions. I realized that I have a nice collection of works that have accompanied many of the books I have purchased and traded over the last 15 years.

The second part of the story is the story of the blue guitar.
This blue guitar, "A Portrait of My Guitar, 2002" by Stephen Mathewson is the first piece I want to feature.

Steve's painting in the darkroom.

The real deal.

It is Steve Mathewson's Teisco Del Rey guitar that has been a part of his music making for a long time. Steve is not only a painter, but the musical master mind behind such bands as The Blitnikoffs, Rat Farmer, and most recently, The Brain Managerz. I can really recommend going to the BM link and listening to a bit of low-fi fun, my favorite is Golden Star, but I think the late nights of seeing it live have sweetened the music for me.

But, this is about Steve's guitar. We traded work years ago, I don't know anymore what picture he got from me but I know I got the better deal. This is a 1:1 painting on wood of Steve's guitar. It is painted on the inside of a closet door, just like the place I hung many of my teenage heroes, starting with Van Halen and Kiss, Black Flag and The Vandals eventually giving way to The Cure and Michael Stipe.  The closet door housed a skateboarding sticker collection and the outside edge was scored with pencil lines marking my growth from childhood to adolescence. The closet door defined my "space", so it felt right to put Steve's guitar in my darkroom. My darkroom is about the same size and shape as my childhood bedroom and heaven knows I spend a lot of time dancing in there by myself, just as in my old bedroom.

Here is Steve, and the blue guitar, in action.

I have quite a collection of paintings and drawings by Steve, and If my book buying keeps slowing down, I am sure I will get around to featuring his gold leaf portraits of a truck driver named Chuck, you don't want to miss that...

Rock on.

Kevin Miyazaki -100 Very Small Observations (for .42 cents)

copyright Kevin Miyazaki, copied from his blog.

A small aside from my planned run of Polaroid works to quickly announce a great deal on prints from Kevin Miyazaki. I also listed his last artist book here. His show has just ended at the MIAD gallery and you can get one of the little (4x6 inch) gems for the price of a postage stamp. It's not a case of price dumping, but instead incorporates the role of his blog into the presentation and treatment of his work:

Here's Part Two to my recent show at MIAD, 100 Very Small Observations. To recap: The show was installed in a gallery in the school's photography department, and my goal was to impart on the students the role that this blog has played in my work and process. To that end, the show consisted of (100) 4x6" digital c-prints, the images having been created for, and initially seen on the blog. You can read earlier posts about the show (and see the pictures) here.

To bring the whole thing full circle, I'll now be giving the prints away to readers of the blog. If you'd like one of the pictures, email me with "100" in the subject line of your email (not just a comment below, please), and I'll email you back with instructions (you'll need to send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope). The first 100 people to email me will receive a randomly selected print, mailed back to you in the envelope you provide (in about 2 weeks).

Andrew Phelps - Print for a Book swap #1

Hello world,

(insert all of the texts you have heard from artists over the last year struggling with the financial state, lack of print sales, rent hikes, need to sell some work fast, offering a one chance edition to survive another month...)

I have made some cut-backs this year as well, specifically buying fewer books. This is my shot at trying to keep my book collection up-to-date.

I am offering a few of my press prints from various book projects over the last years in trade for a selection of books I would like to have. THESE PRINTS ARE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED (a small kink here or there) and most have various printer notes cryptically scribbled on the back, but they are in tact though they show the signs of the scanning and proofing process. They will be inscribed with my name and project title but will also say "press print- not for sale". They are 24x30 cm c-prints, hand printed by me and should look exactly like the printed versions as the scans were made from these exact prints.

I am offering this print from HIGLEY:

Andrew Phelps, Roping Renosos, from Higley, 2007

In trade for this book:

Joel Sternfeld, Oxbow Archive, Steidl 2008

Send me an email  if would like to trade. I am not going to tell you where to buy it, maybe you have an extra copy laying around, but if you do simply order one, I would suggest doing so through one of the stores which I listed in the roster to the right.

SORRY, NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THANKS FOR ALL OF THE INTEREST, DO STAY TUNED...

Juliana Beasley - Holiday print sale

I have been quiet for 2 weeks as I have spent time in the states photographing in
Higley again. I am working on a couple of new projects there, which may or may not find the light of day, but one of them deals with the crashing housing market which has hit places like Higley very hard. Actually, its not that the market crashed, it is just that it leveled out to what might be called a  "normal" rate of growth. Unfortunately, many people banked on the cash-cow grazing comfortably indefinately. Speaking of cows, the running joke, though not funny to many, is that the original Higley farmers are going to come back, buy up all of the track homes, level them and start farming again.

In the last weeks I have gotten so many offers by photographers offering print deals to try to generate sales. I suppose it is a sign that the slacking economy is hitting everywhere.

In case you are looking for a little place in Higley, you can have one of these for about 600,000.- thats down by about 50% from a few months ago:

5,000 sq feet of plywood, styrofoam, chicken-wire and stucco.

I would invest in 1 sq. foot of one of Juliana Beasley's photographs.

Leopard Lady,

is one of 4 being offered for 300 USD.

They are 18x18 inches, edition of 12, which is a quite small edition run for such an offer.

You can get all of the inf here.

I also often find such deals over at Mel's.
She also featured a few of Juliana's work and Mel is a great source for collecting as she is an avid collector and photographer herself.

Lumen Gallery - young Hungarian artist editions

Limited Editions for peanuts-

I recieved this info from my friends and fellow POCs Tehnica Schweiz. I'm not sure how complicated it would be to order one or two of these via post, nor an I find the exact images that are being offered, but the name list is quite impressive in the Hungarian photo scene, and the price of 20 euro isn't even worth mentioning so it might be worth the effort to dig a bit deeper.

The Lumen Gallery is selling original, signed and numbered copies of photographs by young Hungarian Photographers.

All Lumen Edition photographs can be purchased at Lumen Gallery  (1136 Budapest, Gergely Győző utca 3.b) in limited editions (ed. 30) for 5000 HUF / 20 EURO each.

At the moment we have photographs by the following artists on stock: Máté Bartha, Krisztina Erdei, Anna Fabricius, Péter Puklus, Miklós Surányi, Tehnica Schweiz

further information: gergely.laszlo(at)gmail.com

I have been away for 12 days, starting at the Miami art fair, sitting now in Higley visiting family and photographing. One certainly felt the weight of the recession as far as sales go. I don't know if it is a coinicidence, but I have been getting alot of offers lately from photographers offering editions at very low prices. I am collecting a list, and will post it tomorrow.

Sean Davey - Limousines and Hearses

Sean Davey
Limousines and Hearses - Portfolio edition, 2008

This is an interesting constellation of photographs from the Australian photographer Sean Davey.
It is a portfolio of 30 color prints, 12x16 inches, in an edition of 10+2ap. A nice touch is that each edition comes in different colored clam-shell box with a different image on the front. The one photographed above is number 5 of 10.

Limousines and Hearses is, on one level, a visual diary of places and people in Sean's daily routine, but on another level it is a social documentary of urban Australian life.

...personal moments, road trips, walks around my suburb, bus rides, anywhere and everywhere else. S.D.

It could be that I am sitting here, at this very moment, looking at my little piece of the Alps, feeling the tell-tale chill of the impending winter and longing for a place like Australia that is on the cuff of spring, but more than likely I am interested in the work that Sean has put together in this collection of still-lives, landscapes and portraits, telling the story of the mundane in anything but a mundane way.

His homepage is well worth a visit and he claims that this is part 1 of 3, so it might be worth your while to stop by now and then.

Portfolios 1-6 AUD$ 5500, 30 12x16" colour photographs
Edition of 10 plus 2AP

Individual photos are available in an edition of 15 in 3 sizes.
16x20 AUD 350,-
20x24 AUD 450,-
30x40 AUD 550,-

Sonja Thomsen - Surface

Sonja Thomsen
Surface - Limited edition portfolio/book, 2006

This is a limited edition box-set of images from Sonja Thomsen called Surface.
It is an interesting hybrid of a book and a portfolio in a very limited edition of 10 + 1 artist proof.

Surface (2004-2006) is a series of photographs that explore the potential of water and the seductiveness of looking. Small puddles of water become glass, dense fog, toxic haze, bodily fluid, and  primordial soup in my viewfinder. The unfathomable potential of water  to sustain life is a phenomenon that preoccupies me.
A limited edition box set with twelve 12" sq pigment prints in a clam shell box.  An introduction written by Lisa Hostetler, curator of photography at the Milwaukee Art Museum, accompanies the piece.

It was recommended to me by Mel Trittin, who is known for having some nice stuff in her collection, unfortunately this one isn't in mine, but it could be in yours. I have found out about it quite late, so there are only 3 left, hence a slightly higher price than what you might be used to on the Buffet table, but maybe its for you.

The last 3 boxes, numbers 8-10, are available directly through Sonja

Horses Think - Photograph #...

A post this morning from my friend Mel at  Cigarettes and Purity, simply titled "Luck", got me thinking about one interesting way of not selling your work;
you give it away.

If you havn't been to Horses Think, here is a small selection of what you have missed:

Getting one of these images is supposedly as easy as an A in gym class, just show up. But the trick here is that you have to be the first to send an email requesting the image.

It reminds me of the mid 80's when I had the number to the local radio station programmed into the speed-dial on our phone, hoping to be the "9th caller to win the new City Boy album". Or some similair musical give-away.

Due to my technical superiority over most people who still had a rotary phone, I did win that album and a handful of others, unfortunately it was about the hunt and I would automatically dial even before hearing the album being offered.

There is no speed-dial email so I haven't managed to get a print yet and my taste has been fine-tuned a bit so I don't blindly go for just any image from HT, but I keep coming back, hoping that my European time-zone advantage will help someday, to beat out the rest of you while you sleep. I suppose posting this here has even reduced my chances even more.

If you are still reading, you probably missed a print. Maybe I finally got one...

Valie Export - Tatoo

Valie Export
Tatoo 1972 - b/w prints, (1994)

These 3 images are among my favorites in my collection.

They were produced for the Galerie Fotohof Edition in 1994. The images are from 1972 of a tatoo performance by the Austrian artist Valie Export.

Each images is in an edition of 30. The top image is 30x40 cm, the 2 lower ones are 24x30 cm, fiber-base b/w prints, signed, dated and numbered.

The last I checked they were almost sold out so I am not even going to speculate here on availability or price.

Please check out Fotohof for the details.
